About AHHAA
Science Centre AHHAA is a hands-on science museum located in Tartu. It offers interactive exhibitions and educational programs for people of all ages, focusing on making science accessible and fun. AHHAA features a planetarium, a science theater, and various exhibits on physics, chemistry, biology, and astronomy.
How to Exhibit
In front of each exhibit, explanatory text about that exhibit is displayed in five languages, including Estonian, English, and Russian. The contents include how to play with the exhibit, why it is scientifically possible, etc. Visitors can learn from a scientific viewpoint while playing with it. (There were many things we didn't know either...)
This picture explains the flow of water. By reading this explanation, visitors can learn whether the water becomes a straight or a curve when it is rotated while practicing. (When you turn the exhibit shown in the background, the water forms a beautiful curve.)
Role as a Social Education Facility
One event that I remember was when I got lost in a maze of mirrors, a local child guided me through the maze. Although we could not communicate in English, we were able to enjoy the experience with her using only gestures and eye contact. I strongly felt that this experience-based facility allowed communication that transcended language barriers and had a role in providing an extraordinary experience and communication. It is also an ideal place for non-formal education, as knowledge is naturally acquired.
In addition, the center offers classes for scientific experiments in the lab, where you can learn real science from the center's staff. The significance of the AHHAA is that "both children and adults can enjoy and learn together”.
At AHHAA, visitors can experience many things that words and pictures alone cannot convey. Even adults can enjoy themselves like children, so if you have a chance to visit Estonia, please do so.
(By the way, we had so much fun that we didn't take many pictures.)
